The Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor superfight will be held Aug. 26 in Las Vegas. Floyd Mayweather will attempt to improve to 50-0 in the fight, while Conor McGregor will try to stun the combat sports world with a win in his first professional boxing fight.
The next tour stop will be in Toronto on July 12. The video below will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Here was SN’s live coverage of the first stop of the Mayweather vs. McGregor world tour (all times Eastern).
6:12: Ranallo, Maglianaggi and Schaub are discussing who won the presser. They are saying Mayweather won because he went and McGregor gave him plenty of material.
6:10: Mayweather and McGregor went toe to toe, talking trash to each other for over two minutes, before being separated by Dana White. At times they got close to each other. We couldn’t hear what they were saying but it didn’t sound like Christmas cards were being exchanged.
6:05: Mayweather challenges McGregor to come at him. Mayweather says God only made one thing perfect, his boxing record.
6:04: Mayweather tells McGregor, “Don’t fool people” with regard to glove size. Mayweather says the fight can be in 8-ounce or 4-ounce gloves. He tells McGregor that at least he didn’t tap out like McGregor did when he lost to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in March 2016.
6:02: The financial barbs have started. Mayweather said this is what a $100 million man looks like; McGregor responds by saying he needs to talk to the tax man. May went on to say he will finish McGregor.
6 p.m.: Mayweather says he will beat anyone in a ring or an Octagon. McGregor tells Mayweather he’s full of it.
5:58: Mayweather is spouting off his signature line: “Hard work, dedication.”
5:57: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe announces Mayweather.
5:56: McGregor thanks everyone for coming and says he is ready to get the tour started. He exits to his chair.
5:54: McGregor says all these boxing rules are funny to him. He’s making fun of the 10-ounce and gives a shoutout to his clothing line which will come out in August. McGregor adds that he’s proud to do this for his newly born son, which is evident as dad grins from ear-to-ear.
5:51: Dana White, to a loud ovation, announces McGregor. McGregor says he’s bored with what Espinoza and Sturm had to say. He derides Mayweather for wearing a track suit, says he can do whatever he wants and says Mayweather’s zero (as in zero losses) will go away. McGregor says this isn’t a true fight because of the boxing rules. He adds that he will finish Mayweather inside four rounds.
5:48: Richard Strum, president of sports and entertainment of MGM Resorts International, is speaking. Mayweather and McGregor look like they are about to fall asleep.
5:46: Espinoza throws in a jab, running down Mayweather selling more than 20 million PPV buys and generating over a billion dollars.
5:45: The head of Showtime Sports, Stephen Espinoza, is speaking. He’s thanking the UFC for its efforts, and discussing how Mayweather left Top Rank to become his own promoter.
5:42: Mayweather and McGregor go face to face. Mayweather is staring a hole through McGregor while McGregor is talking to him and dancing side to side.
5:39: Round 1 before they start talking goes to McGregor. He comes out dressed sharply while Mayweather is wearing his Money Team hooded sweatshirt and a hat that says 48.
5:37: Mayweather is making his way out through the crowd, to light cheers.
5:33: Here comes McGregor to a thunderous ovation. The UFC lightweight champion is soaking in the roars of the crowd. He has a big smile on his face.
5:31: A great promotional video is being shown. Mayweather and McGregor are about to come out. Goosebumps.
5:27: The breakdowns by Ranallo, Showtime Boxing analyst Paulie Maglianaggi and MMA analyst Brendan Schaub are enjoyable. They are really highlighting McGregor, showing every way he can win the fight, both mentally and physically.
5:23: Showtime Boxing’s Mauro Ranallo says the press conference will begin in a few minutes.
5:20: Kicking off the Mayweather vs. McGregor festivities is a performance by recording artist Aloe Blacc of his new single “King Is Born.” What a waste of time. People aren’t coming to see a singer perform. They want to see Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.
5:15 p.m.: The press conference should be starting in moments. If you had the press conference starting on time, you lost in the office pool.
A large number of the fans assembled for the LA press conference arrived either decked out in UFC merch or proudly waving Irish flags, and Mayweather even had a flag lobbed at him as he made his way to the stage, surrounded by heavies.
Showtime chief Stephen Espinoza was roundly booed as soon as he began wittering on about Mayweather’s legacy, while UFC president Dana White was cheered loudly when he introduced McGregor.
And then there was the reaction to the two men themselves. Mayweather was repeatedly drowned out with jeers, while McGregor only had to raise his hand to the air to be greeted with the sound of thousands singing his name.
Mayweather attempted to sabotage his rival
The most revealing line of this press conference? It wasn’t anything said by either one of the suits — Espinoza or Richard Sturm — and it certainly wasn’t anything said by White, who treated the LA crowd to all of about 12 words.
Nope. Predictably, it was something said by McGregor.
Conor clearly wasn’t meant to have a mic…
After McGregor had finished with his impromptu speech, Mayweather took to the mic.
The undefeated boxer launched into a clearly pre-organised speech, with members of his entourage chanting his slogan back at him, rapgod style. But he hadn’t reckoned on something: nobody had taken McGregor’s microphone away from him.
This fight is going to be political
After the fight, the massive PR operations around both men quickly sprung into action. Some chalked it up as a flawless victory for Mayweather. Others said that McGregor wiped the floor with his rival. Either way: it was difficult to get a straight answer on who got the better of the first press conference.
